Saving Recollections on Video Properly

Many of us have old video recordings we’d like to remember as life events. They are on outdated cassettes and disks requiring noise reduction, brightness adjustment and recording compactly to 1 medium like DVD or Blu-Ray as a whole.

While 15-20 years ago such a task would be rather laborious, now it’s well done with modern computer power. Latest video editor versions work miracles by improving image quality, for example, via a noise filter or enabling to adjust color, lay extra effects on video and use additional sound tracks like with comments or pleasant music. Here’re some popular video editors with rich features to handle video and audio.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro & Adobe Premiere Elements
  • Ulead Video Studio & Ulead Media Studio
  • Pinacle Studio
  • Vegas Movie Studio

To this end, you’ll need an installed video editor, enough hard disk space and a video capture board if you don’t have previously recorded video like in AVI. If you did it before but the disk turned scratched, you’ll have to copy it on the hard disk and then do AVI fix by using video editor features or a video fixer like Digital Video Repair or DivFix++.

Processing your recordings requires the following steps:

  1. Record video with the best possible quality for subsequent processing if you haven’t done this before. Use a Motion JPEG family video codec or the like.
  2. Do initial edit by cutting out movie parts not planned for a final version. Use the cut operation to remove unwanted image pieces.
  3. Set image brightness and contrast to make the picture more pleasant and improve subsequent video filter operation.
  4. For images recorded from analog sources like VHS tapes, use a filter to do deinterlacing operation to remove the image comb effect.
  5. In case of video noise, use a noise filter to improve its quality and compress an output file.
  6. Resize a bit smaller to improve the result and output file size.
  7. Lay necessary special effects to transfer from 1 plot to another.
  8. If needed, add extra sound tracks with background music or comments.
  9. Choose a video and audio compression format and record the result on the hard disk.
  10. Burn the final video to an optical disk like DVD and make up its box.

For a better compression format, mind that if you want to show you movie to the friends from a stationary player, be careful in choosing audio and video codecs. Most contemporary video players support the AVI format with MPEG-4 (DivX, Xvid) compression unlike such computer formats as MP4, MKV, OGM and H.264 (upgraded MPEG-4) which provides far better compressed video quality with lower bitrates but fits few players. The most common audio codec is MP3 (MPEG Layer 3).

Pay special attention to choosing an optical disk for recording. For the longest life time, pick up a branded disk with an extra scratch-proof layer. If you have to transport the disk often, make sure the box is suitable fixating the disk tightly to prevent possible hit consequences when in motion.

Not to get lost in large disk collections, use cataloguer software and properly signed disk covers. So you can always find a necessary disk quickly and have other extra info without looking through all the recorded disks.

Approach preparing video creatively to get a quality result worth seeing in the family and showing to friends and acquaintances in your home.

You Cannot Speed Read a Web Video

Most videos I watch on video sharing sites are poorly done. They waste so much of my time. Here are some suggestions on how to improve your videos.

The videos all suffer from common problems:

* Bad sound
* Bad lighting
* No tripod
* Fuzzy, purpose

Let’s take these in order.

Bad Sound:
The microphone on the camera picks up every sound in the room, echos and all. The sound will be a distant, boomy, hard to understand, and if the recording is at a convention, you can hardly make out the narrative. (I just watched one of those videos…pretty bad.)

This problem is easy to fix, but it may cost some money. The equipment necessary to make good web site videos isn’t very expensive. Get a lavalier mic ($30 on eBay) or a shotgun mike ($250 – $350). I know, it is not easy to find an inexpensive video camera today that has an external mic jack, but that is what you need. They exist, of course, but you will have to really search carefully. Most video camera manufacturers have stopped putting external mic jacks on most of their cameras for cost reasons. You need to step up to a higher level camera where cost is not the main concern of the manufacturer. Here is an article I wrote about inexpensive equipment.

What can you do? If you do a search for “external mic jack video” you will see that Google will serve up several cameras for you to consider…use the quotes around the search phrase as shown here.

Bad lighting:
If you are going to make a video by room light, at least balance it out to make it look more realistic. If you go to the hardware store, you can purchase a work light for about $10. Don’t shine it at your subject, bounce it off a wall or corner of a room. It will take up the color of the walls, so try to find a wall that is close to white. Also, do your video taping at night. You don’t want sunlight coming in. You can correct your video for one color temperature, but not more than one.

Many problems are solved with throwing more light on the subject. The picture will be sharper. (Your video camera will be using a smaller aperature.) In addition, with more light, there will be less blur from movement as a result of the camera using a faster shutter speed.

No tripod:
If you are going to make a good video, use a tripod. If you cannot afford one, then, just place the camera on a sturdy chair, ladder, or whatever you have available. Never hand hold a camera – you can’t hold it perfectly still…it just doesn’t work very well.

Fuzzy purpose:
What are you trying to say? Get to the point. Most of the junk you see in today’s amateur videos is superfluous. Here is a good rule of thumb. Keep your videos to three minutes or less if you plan to publish them on the various video sharing sites. If you have a long instructional video, cut it into several parts. YouTube has a limit of ten minutes anyway.

Start with the end in mind first. Grab their attention with the main point of your video. You don’t have much time in a video to keep their attention. Then, proceed to create interest by supplying details. Be sure that you make your line of thinking easy to follow. (Think it through first. Storyboard it if you must.) Next, deliver the summary. Tell you what you told them.

What do you think? Are you happy with the videos you watch? Do you have suggestions for improvement? Do you prefer to read articles rather than watch videos?

What free video software is best for making youtube videos?

I made a youtube account with a couple of my friends and I hope to be posting some videos on there. I don’t plan on being a serious vloger, so I don’t want to spend a boatload of money on a fancy-pants video editing software, but I was wondering which softwares are free and efficient ? Thanks!

windows live movie maker or windows movie maker (windows movie maker does not come with windows 7)

What video player should I download for my utorrent downloaded videos?

I use thepiratebay, and utorrent to download music and videos. But my Windows Media player won’t play the movies I download. Is there an alternative video player I can use?

What is a good video-editing software for adding special effects to a video?

I am going to be working on a short film, and I am going to need to add lasers into it. What is a good video-editing software that allows you to add special effects such as lasers into videos.

For a computer, I have a Windows XP, and for current video-editing software, I have Windows Movie Maker and Pinnacle VideoSpin, but neither of them have what I need.
Please and thanks.

For video edting software with professional looking effects,I will recommend DVD Slideshow Builder.
Very easy to use with professional features and same sort of layout as Movie Maker however a lot
more powerful.Everything is laid out in an easy to follow step by step instruction.
